God Is Our Shield

God Is Our Shield

“Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him” (Prov. 30:5).

Though relatively few of us may have experienced war, all of us are under attack from our enemy with a wide-ranging arsenal. Our enemy uses envy, lust, and greed to attack our hearts and tell us God isn’t enough to make us happy. Our adversary insists those are more important than God’s purposes. Our culture shouts that no matter how much we have, it is never enough. The enemy of our soul lies to us. He’s a liar from the beginning. He tells us that God doesn’t care, that He can’t help us, and that we are on our own.

In the fight against Him and his arsenal, God is our shield. He protects us by giving us insight from His word so we can fight and win every battle. To be sure, warfare isn’t clean and neat. Sometimes we get dirty, and occasionally we get hurt. But God’s word reminds us of His love and strength. It gives us truth about God’s purposes. It shows the truth of the destructive ways of the world. It brings to light the truth of how our enemy is trying to bring us down.

When we fail to read and implant God’s word, we are vulnerable to attacks. It’s not enough to read God’s word. It must be implanted. It must become second nature to us. As with something vital, we must grasp it, hold it close, and let it control our thinking. The more the word is in us, the more He rules our hearts. His thoughts become our thoughts.
