A Wednesday’s Walk for Rickie J.

“Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.” – Hebrews 13:7

Today’s Wednesday’s Walk will have a new author. This is Jordan Shouse. I am one of the preachers at the Campbell Road Church of Christ. It is my honor to work with Rickie.  Rickie J, you’re always writing such thoughtful and encouraging words for others, and so I thought for your birthday, I’d write a few words for you.

Rickie J, you have been such a joy to work with. I learn so much from you. Your positive outlook on life is contagious! You’ve made me feel so important and valued. Who else would go along with my crazy ideas like making selfie videos about our sermons? From day one you’ve been on my side, and showered me with encouragement and support. These past few years have been a gift I can never repay.

I grew up knowing you. Our family looked up to preachers. And while we had an appreciation for all preachers, we had a special appreciation for you. The Lord has blessed you with some incredible gifts. You have a way with words – not just a vast vocabulary, but knowing how to say the right thing at the right time. You have the ability to craft such deep and thoughtful lessons. I have (and continue) to stand amazed at the sermons you’ve preached, leaving more and more impressed with God and His Word. You connect with your audience so well. That’s what I’ll always remember about your preaching. When I was beginning, I remember seeing you preach from the pulpit, and look at each one in the audience. It truly felt like you were speaking right to me. I left thinking, “I want to preach like that!” You’ve always been one of my favorite preachers.

But Rickie J, as strong as your preaching is (and it is strong), one of the strongest attributes you have is a genuine, sincere love for people. You really love God’s people. I see it in how you listen to others' stories. I see it in how you give your time and attention to those who are hurting. Your genuine love for others flows out of your love for the Lord. Your greatest sermon is the one we see each day in the way you live.

Rickie J, when I think about you, I think about this verse. For years I have been blessed by your teaching. I’ve learned about God and His word through your teaching. I’ve learned about preaching through your preaching. I see in you today the result of one who has committed his life to walking with God. What a tremendous example you’ve set for God’s people! The way you love and care for Jody – the love you have for your children and grandchildren – your knowledge of the word – your commitment to God’s people – becoming more and more like Jesus.

Considering the result of your conduct, yours is an example I want to imitate. I want to be like you – to love my wife like you love yours – to lead my children as you have led yours – to serve this local congregation through my preaching, as you have for the past (nearly) 30 years.

And the best thing, Rickie J, is that your best days are yet to come. The good you do continues on each day. Your work and example continue to make a difference in the lives of others.

If there’s something I could share with you today, on your birthday, is just how much I am thankful for you – for who you are, for what you’ve done, and what you continue to do. Sometimes it’s hard to see the good you’re doing. It’s hard for preachers to continually gage their effectiveness. So let me share what I KNOW to be true: You ARE making a difference. Your preaching IS amazing. The work you do CONTINUES to bless those who see it.

I am truly honored to work with you, for this amazing local church. I’m blessed to have such a source of wisdom and encouragement across the hall. You are my mentor, my co-laborer, my preacher, and my friend. I am who I am today because of you.

I love you Rickie J. Happy birthday.
