Call to Action
God has called us into the fellowship of His Son (1Corinthians 1:9) to His eternal glory (1Peter 5:10) by the gospel of Jesus Christ (2Thessalonians 2:14).
This isn’t just a call for acknowledgement that Jesus is Lord; it is a call to action.
Though some claim that God doesn’t require “works,” His word repeatedly stresses action. In fact, it equips us for action (2Timothy 3:17).
Faith demands action. James 1:17 states, “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead”, and Paul tells the Thessalonians that he remembers “without ceasing your work of faith” (1Thessalonians 1:3).
Repentance is a change of mind bringing a change in action. In Acts 20:20, Paul said that he had declared to the Gentiles “that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.” Their new lives were to prove that they had turned away from their past sinful lives.
Confession is an ongoing action – not just a one-time event. We continually confess with our tongues and our lives that He is our Lord through obedience to His will.
Baptism is the act of being buried with Christ and raised a new man who submits wholly to God.
Love is action measured by sacrifice. We show our love for God through obedience (John 14:15, 21). We serve one another through love (Galatians 5:13)
On Judgment Day, our actions will be judged by the standard of God’s word (Revelation 20:12-13).
Yet we understand that salvation cannot be earned. “So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’” (Luke 17:10).
Let us earnestly heed this call to action. “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9).
