First Love
Years ago Sonny James wrote a song called “Young Love.” One verse went something like this: “Young love, first love, we feel with deep emotions. Young love, our love, we share with deep devotion.” We should remember young love. Remembering is a Biblical concept. John in his Revelation told the church of Ephesus to remember the first love they had left. (Rev. 2:4-5). John repeatedly admonishes the seven churches to remember something. Why? Because our attentions get diverted, and we forget something we ought to remember. Remembering is a real challenge. Young love often reminds us of first love. I want all of us to remember of our first loves.
Remember our first love for the Lord. What if our love for the Lord never grew old? We sing about the land where we will never grow old; but if we forget our love for the Lord, will we enter that land? We must keep our love for the Lord as fresh today as it was when we first knew Him. We must keep it as fresh as when we first obeyed. We do that by renewing our inner man daily (Eph. 4:23). Let’s never outgrow our love for the Lord; never let it grow old. Remember!
Also, remember our love for lost souls. Do we remember that first soul we taught the gospel? Perhaps even baptized? What a euphoric moment! Nothing compares! We never forget our first contribution to someone’s salvation. If we truly remembered the soul of a person is worth more than all the world, and that Jesus even gave His life for each soul, what would we be doing? Remember someone took the time to teach you. Remember!
Furthermore, let’s remember our first love with our mate. It is so tragic that couples forget their first love with one another. Remember how fresh it was, how exhilarating, how much we anticipated seeing one another. Oh, the peace and joy of hearing one another’s voice. What happens to our marriages? We forget our first love. We let our love for our mates grow old, tired, and weary. Life takes a toll on our marriages. We forget. Remember what attracted us to our mates? Remember the first meeting of the eyes? Remember first thoughts? Remember how we would go to any limit just to see one another, especially if in different cities? It is so exciting to see young love. Young love reminds us of when our love was new. Folks: NEVER FORGET!
Remembering can be bitter or sweet depending on the memories. I choose not to remember the bitter. The sweet brings me to tears. Remember….
