The Word of Faith
For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.” (Deuteronomy 30:11-14)
Man can understand God’s word. God’s word is available. God’s word can be obeyed. Moses asserts the beautiful thought that God’s revelation is at man’s doorstep. Paul adapts these same sentiments to the gospel in Romans 10:6-8.
“The word is very near you.” The word of God is within the grasp any honest individual. It is true that some elements of God’s way are unfathomable. But, those truths that lie at the foundation of man’s relationship with God are so simple that a child can understand them. God has shown us what is good in clear terms (Micah 6:8). It is not beyond our grasp.
“The word is in your mouth.” God’s word was not given to satisfy man’s curiosity. It was for man to keep. Moses repeatedly exhorted them: “be careful to observe,” “do not add to nor take away.” God is not amused with man’s creeds or religious traditions. He will not judge according man’s opinions, but according to His word.
“The word is in your heart.” His word is perfectly suited to man’s conscience. Honest hearts will delight in God’s rich truths. They will candidly acknowledge their own helplessness to save themselves. They will rejoice in God’s rich mercies. They will revel in the “abundant life” and rest on its promises (John 10:10).
God’s law requires perfect holiness and unwavering submission (Romans 10:5), thus placing man in a dilemma. Thankfully, God accepts man on the basis of grace through an obedient faith (Romans 10:5-10). If you will confess Jesus and obey him as your Lord, He will be your Savior (Romans 10:9, 10).
